For me, the best and purest thing to expect from a creative writing summer course, is to expect anything. I honestly was unsure of what we would be specifically doing. I was expecting the unexpected. Creative Writing is an English elective course that focuses on the exploration of short fiction and poetry, culminating in a written portfolio that includes one revised short story and three to five polished poems.

You draft, revise, and polish fiction and poetry through writing exercises, developing familiarity with literary terms and facility with the writing process as you study elements of creative writing. Elements of fiction writing explored in this course include attention to specific detail, observation, character development, setting, plot, and point of view. In the poetry units, you learn about the use of sensory details and imagery, figurative language, and sound devices including rhyme, rhythm and alliteration.

You will also explore poetic forms ranging from found poems and slam poetry to traditional sonnets and villanelles. In addition to applying literary craft elements in guided creative writing exercises, you will engage in critical reading activities designed to emphasize the writing craft of a diverse group of authors. You will study short stories by authors such as Bharati Mukherjee and Edgar Allan Poe, learning how to create believable characters and develop setting and plot.

Likewise, you will read poetry by canonical greats such as W. Studying the writing technique of a range of authors provides you with models and inspiration as you develop their own voice and refine your understanding of the literary craft.

By taking a Creative Writing course, you find new approaches to reading and writing that can affect you on a personal level, as the skills you gain in each lesson directly benefit your own creative goals. You'll also attend required "live" sessions with your teacher and classmates. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with each other and your teacher using websites like Zoom and Google and by participating in forums. These tools allow you to build community in the online classroom and share learning and experiences that enable all you to be productive 21 st century learners.

This course is delivered using the Apex Learning Management System that uses a running point grading system. Your grades will include quizzes, journals, practices, forums, live class sessions, computer-graded tests, teacher-graded tests, and projects. Semester grades will be based on your completed quality of work grade prior to taking your semester exams.

All semester exams are proctored. If a student earns a grade below a 70 on a major grade, the teacher will reteach, then reassess. In order to receive reassessment options, you must turn in major grade assignments within a module by the module end date.

You should have access Microsoft Word or Google Docs. We will use Google Docs for teacher feedback and peer review. Software needed to complete this course: Microsoft Word or access to the appropriate Google documents that serve similar purposes. Browser compatibility: Mozilla Firefox 7 or higher preferred; Google Chrome 11 or higher; Internet Explorer 8 or higher.
