People are using the term more loosely than ever, which dilutes the rich history from which Magical Realism arises. When we examine the world-view that Magical Realism portrays, we can then create something amazing that keeps the tradition alive rather than dissing it. Read books in the genre while keeping this post handy, so you understand what to look for. Magical Realism narrative arises from homey oral stories of Latin American culture.

It might seem foreign to you at first. To approach it, enter the trance mindset. Believers band together while coexisting with the prosaic that attempts to squelch it. The style is dense with vivid detail as in the paintings associated with the name, gently whimsical, with positive views toward nature.

It is never an off-world setting, never hard-edged, but about the truly strange organic world that feels familiar to the authors who grew up with folklore and the abilities that come from harmony with the earth and the belief that humanity is not limited in abilities. The imagery is often symbolic and laden with meaning, and the emotions can be strong and heavy. Time flows both ways and may even be circular.

Things can be fated to occur or be influenced by desire, by the future, by agreements before birth, or by native ritual intent. The structure symmetrically sets different levels of existence in relationship with each other, with lower and higher frequencies interacting.

Often the etheric level of imagination, intent and belief precipitates manifestation in tangible reality. The paranormal things people can do often could be considered the result of spiritual maturity, such as telepathy, bilocation, telekinesis, clairvoyance, shape-shifting, entering dreams and living without food or sleep.

The political arena is highly charged with the brutality of colonialism. The higher dimensions are portrayed with just as much vibrancy, local color and heart, as the higher frequencies are believed to be possible to interact with. In other genres, that that reticence might be considered frustrating coyness.

That would be considered disrespectful to the Grandmothers. And perhaps, like the supposed rapturous, levitating nuns, you can. The literature is not about creating an imaginary world where anything goes, such as in Bizarro but capturing the sensation of living with observation colored by the sense of possibilities beyond limitations that are considered the scientific boundaries. Remain logical within those chosen limits.

Decide if your market is primarily more on the Literary or Genre side with each piece and write accordingly. For Literary, get quirky, with a strong voice, employ irony, unreliable narrators and self-reflexive layers. The unreal can teach real lessons. Let yourself go into a trance when writing the first draft.

Polish with beta brain-wave acute attention. Write characters who can heal, see in the dark, live after death, but not in YA or simplified Fantasy straightforward style. Use Literary language to draw the reader into a unique world the readers encounter for the first time, without standard figures like vampires, wizards, or elves. Create the sense of a window to fly out of to enjoy the dissociative world, or encounter dramatized representations of fears and frustrations.

Write reverently about people in touch with nature. The antagonists can represent the short-sighted modernization that is destroying our planet.

Overly good, old-fashioned, predictable protagonists can become uninteresting after a while, so round them out with spicy, saucy, surprising qualities. And perhaps show the dubious value that the modernizing propaganda experts provide. The temptation to give in to what the modernizers creates danger to good people who could enjoy an easier lifestyle than they maintain by living close to the earth.

That creates tension in the minds of people interested in the wares of the infiltrators. When strange things happen, make them meaningful symbolically, familiar as flying. Most people dream about doing so, so it can be accepted by the subconscious. Limit the oddities to one to a very few surprising abilities or major events and make everything else believable.

The conflict is never people disbelieving the characters who see such events. Make time cycle around, arriving to where it began with a sense of irony.

People can live in more than one time frame at once. The present and future can influence the past. An event is meant to occur or is attracted through intent, or by spirits.

Write liminal events that happen on the borders, especially relating to different cultures. The underdog can try, but he can never really bring back what he once had before being taken over by the modernizing forces.

Authority figures are menacing: the Other. The underdogs, instead of being stiff and ruthless like them, celebrate life with color, pageantry, relaxed enjoyment, costumes, illusionists, contortionists, games, dance and music. Write a lush style of plenitude in your sentences, full of detail, elaborate flourishes, or a taut style similar to what authors such as Marquez employ.

Musicality, beauty, rural elegance and enchanted language work well, but technical, hard-edged, stiff language does not. Create a grounded, real-world setting that readers can believe in to prepare for the oddness. Just let it be. Make us want to trust the characters. When they experience heightened emotions, intense revelations and major transformations, their power impinges on the ordinary world and makes things happen.

These things can be expressed in the actual world as if the symbolism were so true and deeply felt that it becomes literal. These are not usually related to a religious figure. People have the power. Draw on your own experiences, such as believing in a Tooth Fairy when you suspected something was up.

But getting money under your pillow still happened, and it was fun. A person might be an atheist, yet experience religious visions. Two opposing worlds can mirror each other and interact. Do whatever you can to shake the reader up so his familiar and relaxed reading experience is suddenly questioned in order to heighten attention to the text.

You can derange the details, making things contradict, exist in more than one way, intersect magically and become a complex puzzle of perspectives and ambiguities. Avoid vampires, werewolves, aliens, angels, ghosts, etc. Target your narratives to publications that ask for Magical Realism by name.

If they do, notice if they want Latin American authors and locations only. To suggest a Latin American flavor, you might use Spanish names and animals, landscapes, though unless you research the location in depth, you can leave the place unnamed, and vague. Read the stories in the publication that you want to get into, and if they follow the traditions, only send them work that does as well. Speculative fiction readers often find Literary pretentious navel-gazing on boring topics.

Note that New Wave Fabulism is about the role of imagination, the telling of stories. If that fits what you write, by using that label, you have a wider range of publications you can submit to if you are not of that ethnicity yourself. Today, magical realism is viewed as an international trend, finding expression in many countries and cultures. Book reviewers, booksellers, literary agents, publicists, and authors themselves have embraced the label as a way to describe works that infuse realistic scenes with fantasy and legend. However, fairy tales are not magical realism. Neither are horror stories, ghost stories, science fiction, dystopian fiction, paranormal fiction, absurdist literature, and sword and sorcery fantasy.

To fall within the tradition of magical realism, the writing must have most, if not all, of these six characteristics:. In "Beloved," American author Toni Morrison spins a darker tale: An escaped enslaved woman moves into a house haunted by the ghost of an infant who died long ago. These stories are very different, yet both are set in a world where truly anything can happen. Myths and Legends: Much of the strangeness in magic realism derives from folklore, religious parables, allegories, and superstitions.

Often, legends from divergent places and times are juxtaposed to create startling anachronisms and dense, complex stories. Historic Context and Societal Concerns: Real-world political events and social movements entwine with fantasy to explore issues such as racism , sexism, intolerance, and other human failings. Distorted Time and Sequence: In magical realism, characters may move backward, leap forward, or zigzag between the past and the future.

Sudden shifts in narrative and the omnipresence of ghosts and premonitions leave the reader with the sense that events cycle through an endless loop.

What gives a human, and not a fish, moral consideration in terms of not being viewed as a commodity only? None of these words show up in the story itself. A flower bulb might experience life without these words but not, science tells us today, without emotion and language. Flowers experience friendship, daughterhood, and separation. This is a very political story for me. Magical realism often emerges amidst dangerous axes of power.
